Stephens College boasts first varsity collegiate all-women’s esports team
A mid-Missouri all-women's college has started a program which is the first of its kind in the United States - a varsity collegiate all-women’s esports team.
Stephens College, a member of the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE), said its team will begin competing in the fall.
The college has the following statement on its website about the esports program:
"Esports is quickly on its way to becoming a billion-dollar industry, and we believe women should have the same opportunities as men to succeed in this emerging business. Stephens’ mission across all our programs has been to ensure women have a seat at any table. Getting involved in esports is part of that long-standing tradition, and aligns with our mission to promote teamwork, communication skills, as well as more interest in the science and technology fields for women."
The college has an esports and gaming center on campus and an esports club on campus.
Scholarships will be available to eligible candidates.
The team will begin competing in the game “Overwatch,” selected because of its diverse and strong female characters, according to Stephens College.
