St. Louis welcomes 251-pound baby elephant

The calf isn't on view yet. Eventually, the zoo plans to hold a contest to name her.

St. Louis Zoo officials are describing a 251-pound newborn as petite. The female is the newest member of the zoo's three-generation Asian elephant family.

Mammal curator Martha Fischer notes that the 38-inches tall elephant is smaller than one of her siblings. The elephant's 42-year-old mother, Ellie, gave birth late Friday after a two-year pregnancy.

The calf was up nursing within minutes. She's spent her first hours eating and sleeping.

With her arrival, the zoo's elephant herd now numbers 10.
