Sonic boom felt in mid-Missouri

The loud noise heard and felt by many mid-Missourians at approximately 11:40 a.m. Thursday was a sonic boom, according to the Callaway County Emergency Management Agency.

A loud noise and a shaking that rattled windows in Fulton and Jefferson City has been confirmed as a sonic boom, according to the Callaway County Emergency Management Agency.

A sonic boom is caused by shock waves created by an object, such as an airplane, that travels through the air faster than the speed of sound.

The Callaway EMA's statement reads, "For those hearing a loud explosion sound in the southern portion of Callaway county, it was confirmed by the FAA that it was a sonic boom. There was NO explosions."
