Shots fired into Columbia home with children inside

Evidence revealed the shots were fired from the roadway into the front of the home on Demaret Drive.

Update: February 21, 2014, 5:30 p.m.

Boone County Sheriffâ??s investigators are looking for someone they said fired shots at a mother and her 3 children.

They found 3 shell casings near an apartment in the 700 block of Demaret Drive east of Columbia just before 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. They also found a round that passed through a window and landed on the kitchen floor. A mother and her 3 children were not hurt. Robert Smith lives on Demaret Drive and said itâ??s a dangerous place.

Smith said, â??This street, I have to say, I think the landlords need to start cracking down on the background checks and making sure there is clean people out here.â??

The mother of the 3 children told investigators that she did not have an ex-husband, ex-boyfriend or any enemies that would want to shoot her. Authorities have not leads. Deputies have no suspects or vehicle description. Neighbors said they think it was a drive-by shooting. They donâ??t think the mother and her 3 children were the intended targets.

Boone County Sheriffâ??s Department Detective Tom Oâ??Sullivan said, â??Demaret Drive has always been a hot spot for the sheriffâ??s department. It is a crime ridden street. Every type of criminal activity that you can imagine has been committed on that street. Itâ??s just a major problem for the sheriffâ??s department.â??
