      Shots fired in police standoff

      A Bunceton man is dead after exchanging gunshots with Cooper County deputies on Thursday.

      A Bunceton man is dead after exchanging gunshots with Cooper County deputies on Thursday.

      The Cooper County Sheriffâ??s Department says 31-year-old Jason Steding was taken to University Hospital by helicopter for a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff that lasted several hours.

      Deputies arrived at the home in Bunceton after responding to a report of a burglary and a vehicle fire.

      Steding fired multiple shots at the officers as they tried negotiating with the man to surrender.

      Shortly before 6 p.m., Steding came out of the house and shot himself.

      He died shortly after 10 a.m. Friday from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to Cooper County Sheriff Jerry Wolfe.
