Sexual psychopath gets life for rape of MU student

Life sentence in 14 year old rape case on the University of Missouri campus

A Columbia man faces two life prison sentences for raping a college student 14 years ago. Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight says Marvin Jones would be 82 years old before being eligible for parole.

Jones was charged with two counts of forcible sodomy and one count of forcible rape in a 1999 incident at the Gillette residence hall on the MU campus.

The victim immediately had a "rape kit" done at a hospital to collect evidence. It was DNA evidence from that kit that 13 years later was matched to Jones.

He pleaded guilty and Monday was sentenced to three life sentences, two to run concurrently. Knight says Jones had a pattern of preying on women and admitted as much.

" I think another thing that was very important also was emphasizing the defendant's extremely violent criminal history," said Knight. "He's definitely... I would characterize him as being a sexual predator, I would characterize him as a psychopath, among other things."

Knight praised the victim for reporting the crime. "The defendant told her not to report it, that he would find her, that he would kill her if she told anybody about this. So it took a great deal of courage for her to report this in the first place." She did not know the identity of her attacked for 13 years until a DNA database matched Jones to the crime.

Knight says Jones also admitted to forcing dozens of other women to have sex and routinely exposing himself to women near the MU and Columbia College campuses over a 20 year period.

" The defendant admitted that in his lifetime he had used force or coercion to obtain sexual contact from about 20 different women. So, you know, we're dealing with a person who is absolutely a dangerous career criminal. Also, he admitted to committing a number of burglaries in the Columbia, Missouri area. He had admitted to entering into residences in the area over a 20 year time period without the knowledge of the people who were inside and masturbating while watching women inside of these residences, sometimes with children present," explained Knight.
