Senator Kurt Schaefer plans to run for Missouri attorney general

The Missouri Senate's chief budget writer will seek the Republican nomination for state attorney general in 2016.

Sen. Kurt Schaefer, of Columbia, made the announcement Wednesday. The office is expected to be up for grabs because the two-term incumbent, Democrat Chris Koster, has already said he's preparing to run for governor in 2016.

Schaefer chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee. He's in his second term in the Senate and is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

Schaefer has worked previously as an assistant attorney general and was a special prosecutor. He says Missourians need an attorney general who has experience prosecuting violent criminals.
