A man was taken to the hospital after he was hit by a semi on I-70 early while walking on the highway.
Mon, 22 Apr 2013 14:11:35 GMT — A semi hit a man walking along I-70 early Monday morning. At about 12:45 a.m. Monday, a 2013 International Prostar Tractor-Trailer Unit was traveling westbound on I-70 near the 127.8 mile marker. Columbia Police said 23-year-old Nicholas Braun was walking in a westbound lane of traffic when the driver of the semi, 55-year-old Robert Berst, tried to avoid him. Berst was unable to swerve far enough, and the semi hit Braun near the passenger headlight. Braun was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. By late afternoon, Braun's condition was listed as "serious." It is unkown why Braen was in the lanes of traffic and not on the shoulder, according to Columbia Police. Officers said they do not believe excessive speed, alcohol and/or inattention on Berst's part played a role in the incident. Berst voluntarily submitted to a chemical result of his blood.
