      Search continues for 2 men missing in Western Missouri lake

      Update: Friday, July 5 at 12:15 p.m. Crews have recovered the bodies of two men who drowned in a western Missouri lake.

      The Kansas City Star reports the two men were reported missing at Smithville Lake on Thursday. Their bodies were recovered early Friday.

      The Missouri State Highway Patrol identifies the two men as Gregory Weese of Plattsburg, and John Butts of Smithville. Both men were 55.

      Witnesses told the patrol the men had been wading near the lake's northern shore in Clinton County when one of the men either slipped into the water or fell in a hole. The other man then tried to help before both were swept away in the water.

      Patrol Sgt. Sheldon Lyon says crews searched for the men Thursday night, and resumed the search early Friday.

      Two men have apparently drowned in a western Missouri lake.

      The Kansas City Star reports the men, both reported to be in their 50s, were wading in the northern part of Smithville Lake when one of the men disappeared under water and the other man tried to help him.

      Crews from the Missouri State Highway Patrol dragged the area of the lake on Thursday searching for the their bodies. The search was suspended Thursday night, but is expected to resume Friday.
