Ryan Ferguson files civil lawsuit, seeks $100 million

Ryan Ferguson is freed.

Ryan Ferguson has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the City of Columbia, police and prosecutors for his arrest in the murder of Kent Heitholt.

Ferguson wants to face a jury again, this time to clear his name.

After his conviction, Ferguson spent almost 10 years in prison until he was released late last year. An appeals court found he did not receive a fair trial.

The 50 page lawsuit names the police officers who questioned him, Columbia's former police chief, investigators for then prosecutor Kevin Crane and Crane himself, who is now a circuit judge. Also named is the City of Columbia.

The nine counts boil down to Ferguson's contention all along, that he was railroaded and there was no evidence against him.

Ferguson is seeking $75 million in compensatory damages and $25 million in punitive damages.
