Update: Monday, Feb. 27 at 4:39 p.m.:
A Columbia man accused of murdering his girlfriend??s aunt was in court on Monday afternoon.
Ryan Bridger , 22, only spent about 3 minutes before Boone County Judge Gary Oxenhandler. Bridger wants to delay his murder trial because he has a new public defender.
Oxenhandler continued Bridger??s case without setting a date for his next court appearance. Public Defender Chris Hayes took over Bridger??s case and needs more time to prepare for trial. Prosecutors say Bridger used a small caliber handgun to shoot Aletha Turner, 67, at her Lake of the Woods home in December. Turner died at a hospital 2 days after the shooting. Court documents show Bridger admitted he stole Turner??s checkbook and pawned some of her jewelry.
Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Andrea Hayes said, ??The Bridger case was continued into the future. We??re going to be meeting with the judge within the next week to talk about a date in the next few months to set up for a jury trial.??
Hayes expects Bridger??s trial to last 5 days. Bridger??s trial will likely begin this summer as late as August.
Bridger??s attorney has requested a change of venue for the upcoming murder trial.
Bridger faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and second-degree burglary.
Bridger is being held on $1 million bond.
