Richard King sells The Blue Note

Richard King is selling The Blue Note and Mojo's to two men who operate a similar venue in Madison, Wis.

The owner of two popular music clubs announced Wednesday he is selling the venue to two Wisconsin-based owners.

Richard King told KRCG 13 he decided to sell The Blue Note and Mojoâ??s to two men who own a similar venue in Madison, Wis., home of the University of Wisconsin. Matt Gerding and Scott Leslie own The Majestic Theatre, which King said has become Madisonâ??s premier live music venue under their watch. Gerding is a Columbia native and a University of Missouri alum. King said the two men have been trying to buy The Blue Note for some time. He said he decided to sell due to his age and recent health problems.

â??You have to be young to be in this business,â?? he said. â??Iâ??m not so young anymore.â??

King called the two buyers a perfect fit and said he was excited to see what they do with his former businesses. He said Gerding and Leslie might make some minor changes but will largely stick to what has made The Blue Note famous.

â??Itâ??s a changing of the guard. Thereâ??s not going to be any seismic change in what goes on in Columbia music-wise. In fact, I think it will be a huge improvement to whatâ??s going on,â?? King said.

Gerding and Leslie will gradually take over Kingâ??s businesses over the next 3 to 6 months.
