Investigators say 16-year-old fired fatal shot on Claudell Lane
Court documents obtained by KRCG 13 on Wednesday detailed the moments that led up to Thursday's fatal shooting on Claudell Lane.
According to a probable cause statement, investigators believe a juvenile told Brian Smith that Keith Chambers wanted to buy marijuana, and Smith contacted Dariel Reid via social media to arrange the purchase. They said Reid and a different juvenile met with Smith and Chambers. Reid allegedly told investigators Smith and Chambers began to argue over the weight of the marijuana, so Reid invited them to his apartment to weigh it. While they were weighing the marijuana, investigators said Chambers pulled a gun and tried to steal the drug. Smith told investigators he grabbed the marijuana and Chambers shot Reid in the arm. At that point, the juvenile who was with them shot Chambers in the chest. Chambers died in the hospital.
The juvenile's case was being handled by the Boone County Juvenile Office. Reid and Smith both have upcoming court dates. Reid had a case review scheduled for January 11, while Smith had a counsel status hearing on January 10 and a preliminary hearing on January 17. Both men faced second-degree murder charges. In addition, Smith faced a first-degree robbery charge while Reid faces a charge of distributing a controlled substance.
