Police are asking the public for help in locating a man who attempted to abduct an elementary student Tuesday morning.

The Jefferson City Police Department said the suspect vehicle is a bright red Ford truck with 'FX' lettering on the side. The truck was also believed to have step rails and a silver/chrome brush guard. It was believed to have Missouri plates, with the last digit possibly an 8, police stated.

At around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to West Elementary School for an attempted child abduction that occurred in an area neighborhood.

The intended victim, a juvenile who attends the elementary school, told police she was on her way to school in the Hayselton/Allen Drive area when a male suspect grabbed her off of her bicycle and tried to pull her into his vehicle. The student was able to get away and get to school, where she immediately notified school officials, who in turn contacted police, according to JCPD.

The suspect was described as a male in his mid-30s, with scruffy, brown hair and crooked teeth.

"We want to find out who did this and we want to take them into custody sooner than later," Jefferson City Police Captain Doug Shoemaker said Tuesday.

A $500 CrimeStoppers reward has been offered by the Jefferson City Area CrimeStoppers for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Anyone with any information has been encouraged to contact Jefferson City Police at 634-6400, or CrimeStoppers at 659-TIPS.
