Documents: Men charged with tampering hid gun, drugs
Two men charged with tampering with evidence in a Saturday evening incident that resulted in the gunshot death of a Columbia man are suspected of removing the gun used along with a mason jar of marijuana.
According to court documents, the unidentified victim was found by police just outside the door of his residence in the 1500 block of Rolling Rock Drive suffering from a gunshot wound. No gun was located.
At first, the documents state that the victim's roommate, Deandre Winters, 22, told police that the victim's wound was not self-inflicted. He later changed his story.
Winters told investigators that before he called police, he called his friend Darren Carter, 20, of Columbia and asked him to remove the gun he found next to the victim's body from the house. He also took a backpack containing a Mason jar out of the house. Carter's girlfriend told officers that the victim kept marijuana in Mason jars.
Carter and Winters have been charged with Felony Tampering with Physical Evidence in relation to the incident. They were charged Tuesday and placed on $100,000 bonds in the Boone County Jail.
