Police hope to prevent Spring Break burglaries

Columbia Police want residents to be careful before leaving for Spring Break vacations.

Police say if you plan on being away for an extended amount of time you could increase the risk of becoming a victim of a burglary.

Here are some suggestions the Columbia Police Department have to help prevent Spring Break Burglaries:

    • Leave ample lights on, or use timers.

    • Arrange for mail pickup or stop delivery or mail, newspapers, and packages.

    • Ensure all doors and windows are secure.

    • Disable automatic garage doors.

    • Make a list of valuable items to include serial numbers.

    • Ask a trusted friend, neighbor or family member to check on your house.

    • Do NOT announce your vacation on voicemail, email, or social media sites.

    • Give the residence the appearance that someone is home.
