Plans underway for veterans housing community

Columbia Housing Authority administrators will discuss their plans tonight for 29 shelter beds and 25 apartments for homeless and low-income veterans.

Plans are moving forward for a new veterans housing community in Columbia.

Welcome Home Inc., the Columbia Housing Authority, and the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans?? Hospital have formed a partnership to renovate the Deluxe Inn Motel on Business Loop 70.

Housing Authority Administrators will discuss their plans tonight for 29 shelter beds and 25 apartments for homeless and low-income veterans.

The agencies have $1.7 million in tax credits and tax-exempt bonds to help pay for the $8 million project.

The partnership plans to kick-off a fundraising campaign this fall, to collect about $5.5 million in donations.

Columbia Housing Authority CEO Phil Steinhaus said, ??We think that we have broad support in our community to help our veterans. As Welcome Home says, they don??t leave their veterans in the field and we are not going to leave our veterans on the street, either. I think we have a great plan. I??m confident the community is going to rally around and show support for our veterans.??

Steinhaus hopes the project is finished by the fall of 2016.

Veterans would live in one-bedroom apartments.
