Pit bull beaten to death with flower pot, wooden board

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 19:59:06 GMT — Authorities arrested a Columbia man Friday after he allegedly beat a pit bull to death.William Smith faces a felony charge of animal abuse. Investigators said the 37-year-old used a wooden board and a flower pot to beat the dog until it fell into a coma. The animal died shortly after.The attack happened at Smithâ??s home in the Colonial Village Trailer Court on Rangeline Street.Boone County Health officials said their animal control officers get special training for horrific cases like this one.Boone County Health Department spokeswoman Geni Alexander said, â??Our animal control officers are passionate about animals. You cannot do that job and not be. This case has been particularly disturbing to them. We are so proud of the professionalism of our officers.â??Authorities do not know who the owner of the pit bull was or Smith's motive for the attack.
