Police have identified the Rolla man arrested for murder in Phelps County.
Investigators said David Lundin, 60, shot and killed Richard Finnell, 57, during a dispute Thursday afternoon.
Court documents show Lundin broke through a window before he murdered Finnell in his Phelps County home just south of Rolla. The victim was with a woman who was not hurt and told police what happened. Moments after the murder, several witnesses saw Lundin in a nearby Rolla neighborhood. Linda Wilkins saw officers searching for Lundin.
Wilkins said, â??I was very scared because I take my dogs out in the evening, late at night, down by my house. I was glad that they jumped on it. I think they need a good pat on the back for getting him that quick because he wasnâ??t on the loose for that long.â??
Witnesses said there was a lot of activity during the 3 hour search. A highway patrol helicopter circled overhead as dozens of officers on the ground searched for Lundin as he walked near a bike trail carrying a shotgun. Rolla police officers arrested Lundin in the backyard of a home in the 1200 block of Winchester Drive. He was still carrying a shotgun.
Rolla Police Department Captain Jason Smith said, â??There was a lot of citizen involvement. They were calling 911 and reporting a man with a gun was running in their yards and behind their houses.â??
Deputies said it was a miracle no one was hurt during the manhunt.
Phelps County Sheriffâ??s Department Captain Rick Hope said, â??The team effort between the law enforcement agencies was just unbelievable. They came together to apprehend a dangerous and armed suspect.â??
Lundin has spent 20 years in prison and has an extensive criminal history that includes armed robbery, rape, burglary and stealing.
Lundin is being held in the Phelps County Jail.
