Petition asks for Chief Burton resignation

Supporters of a fired Columbia police officer have started a petition calling for Police Chief Ken Burton to resign or be fired.

Signers of the petition are upset over the firing of police officer Rob Sanders who lost his job after allegedly using excessive force on an inmate in a holding cell.

Members of a group calling themselves Chief Burton Needs to Resign say Columbia deserves a police chief without a checkered past.

Petition organizers gave KRCG several documents from Burton TMs former employer the Dallas Police Department.

The documents show Burton resigned in 1981 because of a case involving excessive force.

Organizers plan to give their petition to Columbia City Manager Mike Mathes and council members.

Both Chief Burton and petition organizer Doug Lane did not respond to our requests for interviews.
