The Jefferson City Police Department responded to a call about a motorcycle crash at 11:33 p.m. Thursday night in the 700 block of Clark Ave.

According to a news release, they saw two people lying in the street.

The driver, 38-year-old Shawn Cochran, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, 31-year-old Morrigan Carpenter, was found conscious with serious injuries. She was flown to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis from the University Hospital in Columbia.

The initial investigation revealed that the motorcyclists were traveling southbound on Clark Avenue, but failed to stay in the lane. The motorcycle crossed the center of the roadway and began sliding on its right side before it struck a curb, a utility pole, a road sign, and a dirt embankment.

The crash ejected both the driver and passenger. Both Cochran and Carpenter were wearing helmets, but Carpenter's helmet was the only one that was DOT approved.

The investigation is ongoing.
