One dead after I-55 accident

One person is dead after a tractor-trailer fire forced the closure of I-55 in suburban St. Louis and may have led to a later crash as traffic backed up along the interstate.

Authorities say the tractor-trailer caught fire Thursday afternoon in the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 in south St. Lois County, near the Jefferson County line. The fire caused all lanes to close in both directions between Interstate 270 and Meramec Bottom Road. The Missouri Highway Patrol says a fire in the truck's brakes spread to the rest of the vehicle.

Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the fatal crash occurred about 2 p.m. on northbound I-55 near Highway 141. He said traffic from the earlier tractor-trailer fire could have contributed to the crash.
