MoDOT crews prepare for another round of winter weather

(File).

With another round of winter weather expected to hit central Missouri this weekend, the Missouri Department of Transportation is making preparations.

Engineers said Friday they had a conference call with representatives from the department's districts as well as Missouri State Highway Patrol administrators.

Road crews began reporting to maintenance facilities in Boone, Callaway and Cole Counties at around 6:30 p.m. Friday night. During the day, crews brined bridges, ramps, and the stretch from Interstate 70 from Callaway County to Cooper County.

With ice accumulation expected in some parts of the area, engineers said roads could require a lot of salt. An ice event can require as much, if not more, salt than six to eight inches of snow.

"Mother Nature is still going to exert her influence but we can at least slow her down some," said Jason Shafer, an engineer for MoDOT. "We're brining ahead of time and have our crews out ahead of time to see where the worst areas are as the storm unfolds."
