Missouri National Guardsman charged with forgery

A member of the Missouri National Guard was arrested for felony forgery after collecting donations for the Wounded Warrior Project and allegedly using the funds for his own gain.

According to the Phelps County Sheriff's Department, 33-year-old Andrew James Fortner, formerly from Leasburg and now in the process of moving to Pierce City, was arrested Wednesday after an investigation that started in late October. After investigators coordinated with the Wounded Warrior Project in Jacksonville, FL, it was determined that Fortner hadn't made any donations on his or anyone else's behalf.

During the course of the investigation it was also found that Fortner used the same ploy in a number of other jurisdictions and more charges are being considered.

Fortner is being charged with two felony counts of forgery. His bond has been set at $100,000 cash or surety.
