A grandmother and her two grandchildren were found safe this morning after getting lost and spending a night in the woods.
Callaway County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about 1:00 am Tuesday that a 58-year-old grandmother and her two grandchildren were missing. According to investigators, the grandmother, her 10-year-old grandson, and 12-year-old granddaughter took a walk Monday afternoon off County Road 346 near Millersburg.
The children, who live in Columbia, were visiting their grandmother's house. Several hours passed and when the family members had not returned, other members of the family began searching.
The Callaway County Sheriff's Office initiated a large scale search near the Mark Twain National Forest area. Assisting agencies included the Millersburg Fire Protection District, New Bloomfield Fire Protection District, Holts Summit Fire Protection District, Boone County Fire Protection District, Callaway County EMS, Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Several search dogs and ATVâ??s were also used in the search.
At approximately 9:30 am Tuesday, the three family members were found walking on County Road 354 near state road J. The grandmother and her two grandchildren reported to investigators that they had become lost and disoriented while deep in the woods.
None of the family members were injured and there was no indication of criminal activity.
