Mid-MO group to hold Transgender Day of Remembrance at the State Capitol

Transgender Day of Remembrance rally in Jefferson City expected to have large turnout (Cathy Serrino)

The mid-Missouri Transgender support group will hold their second annual Transgender Day of Remembrance on the south lawn of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City Saturday.

Cathy Serino appeared on KRCG 13 Live at Sunrise Friday to speak about how the rally and candlelight vigil is "to remember the lives lost to hate and violence."

She said the day of remembrance has been a national event since 1999.

"2016 has been another record breaking year for the murder of transgender people in the U.S.," said Serino. She expressed concerns about the changing political environment and how many in the transgender community are fearful of how that might affect them.

The 4 p.m. event will feature guest speakers from across the state.

Serino said since speakers are coming from St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield they expect a large turnout.
