Children of all ages hit the ice as central Missouri's only ice rink reopened for another season Monday.
Recreation program supervisor Missy Morarity told KRCG the Washington Park Ice Arena closes each spring as children who normally frequent the rink get drawn into summer sports like swimming or baseball. She said the rink will remain open through April 21 and will offer a full complement of programs including ice hockey and speedskating. Morarity said the rink will offer a Try Hockey for Free weekend for the first time this year. during which children ages 3-18 can take free hockey lessons to see if they like the sport. She said that weekend is set for Aug. 24-25.
Morarity said the rink, which opened in 1960, is the only indoor ice rink in mid-Missouri, and there are no outdoor rinks. She said the nearest rinks besides Jefferson City's are in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas.
