      Mid-Missouri mourns murdered child

Authorities say Scottie Willet is accused of shooting a six-year-old Dayne Hathman while babysitting the child early Thursday morning

UPDATE: Deputies tell KRCG 13 Dayne Hathman suffered two gunshot wounds. Some of the evidence is being sent to the crime lab for further investigation, although deputies would not say why. No decision has been made about whether prosecutors will ask for the death penalty in this case.

People throughout mid-Missouri are coming together through social media to remember a six-year-old Fulton area boy who was murdered.

Authorities say Scottie Willet is accused of shooting a six-year-old Dayne Hathman while babysitting the child early Thursday morning.

Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane told reporters Thursday afternoon Scottie Willet was a friend of the boy's family who had been living with them since January. He said Willet was babysitting the boy while the mother was at work when the murder happened.

Court documents show Willet admitted to Crane he shot the child multiple times with a Hi-Point .40-caliber handgun. Willet is now in the Callaway County jail on a $1,000,000 cash-only bond.

To remember the child, many facebook users are changing their profile pictures to a picture of Elmo.

There is also a memorial fund set up for Dayne and his family.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Dayne Friday at the Boone and Callaway County Coroner's Office in Columbia.
