Missouri State Fair officials named a Mexico woman as an outstanding female agriculturist in a new contest sponsored by Monsanto.
Kellar Nelson received the title of Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star.
She won a $1,000 prize.
Nelson plans to donate the winnings to the Boone County 4-H Programs.
She has been active in the Missouri State Fair through 4-H, showing sheep and cattle, as well as presenting demonstrations in the 4-H Building.
Nelson said, ??I??m very honored to have received this award. It??s a great experience. It??s great that the state fair is honoring and recognizing women in agriculture. I??m happy to give that donation to the Boone County 4-H Programs. They made a big difference in my life. I??m excited about that donation, as well.??
Nelson is the first recipient of the Rising Star award.
She has a master??s degree in plant, insect and microbial sciences from the University of Missouri.
