Mermaids share fish tales of Aqua Rama

Nearly 50 years ago, a roadside attraction on Highway 54 delighted Osage Beach visitors with "beautiful girls that live like fish".

Nearly 50 years ago, a roadside attraction on Highway 54 delighted Osage Beach visitors with "beautiful girls that live like fish".

The Aqua Rama underwater mermaid show featured women dressed in fishtails performing in a 85,000 gallon pool with a large glass window.

Amazed audiences got to watch the underwater world of the Aquamaids and Aqualads.

A Portland, Oregon couple held an Aqua Rama reunion to remember the underwater shows from the past.

Reunion Organizer Jeff Kunkle said, "Here we are still tracking everyone down and calling them out of the blue. We're asking people if they were a mermaid in 1964. After a moment of stunned silence, we get to hear great stories."

Wally and Nola Johl opened the underwater mermaid show at Lake of the Ozarks in 1964.

The underwater theater closed in 1973.
