Man shoots at officers, turns gun on self

A 58-year-old man is dead after apparently turning his gun on himself as law enforcement investigating a domestic assault moved in on his home, according to the Hermann Police Department.

Police say it all started around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, when officers responded to a report of a domestic assault at 201 Schiller Street.

The 51-year-old victim was taken to Hermann Hospital for treatment and told police her boyfriend attacked her.

Officers then responded to the Schiller St. home to try to find the man. Police say as officers approached an upstairs living area, the suspect fired one shot at the nearest officer, missing his head by just inches.

The three officers retreated and took cover and tried to talk the man into dropping the gun and coming out of the apartment.

The man then fired a second shot at a different officer, again narrowly missing the officer. Two of the three responding officers returned the gunfire and the suspect retreated into darkness.

The officers then heard a third gunshot from inside the apartment.

When more officers from the Hermann Police Department, Gasconade County Sheriff's Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol arrived, they entered the home and found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His identity is not being released, pending notification of next of kin.
