Man hospitalized after driving on wrong side of road, overturning car

A man from Lees Summit was injured after driving on the wrong side of Highway 63, crashing into a sign and overturning his car.

Just before midnight on Wednesday, 20-year-old Gregory L. Phipps lost control of his car while heading in the wrong direction and veered off the side of Highway 63. His car struck a roadway sign and overturned several times before coming to a rest on its side on Lenoir St. near Ed's Mobile Home Park.

He was transported to University Hospital for life-threatening injuries. According to police, excessive speed and alcohol intoxication may have contributed to the crash, but blood alcohol tests are not available yet.

The crash is still under investigation.
