Man gets seven years for beating estranged girlfriend

A Cole County judge found 53-year-old Joseph A. Bax guilty of second-degree domestic assault and violating an order of protection.

A Jefferson City man was sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting his estranged girlfriend.

A Cole County judge found 53-year-old Joseph A. Bax guilty of second-degree domestic assault and violating an order of protection.

According to court documents, Bax showed up intoxicated at his estranged girlfriend's house on Aug. 15, 2013. After an argument ensued, the woman attempted to call for help. Bax took her phone away from her and dragged her back to her apartment when she tried to get help from a neighbor. He then choked and continued to assault her.

When police told Bax he would likely kill someone if he did not change his behavior, he said, "I know. Eventually she will learn".

The jury deliberated for approximately six minutes before finding Bax guilty.
