Man breaks pelvis, leg in paraglider crash

Boone County Fire Protection District officials say a man suffered broken bones after a paraglider crash Sunday.

Crews received a call reporting the crash around 5:25 p.m. to the dead end of Tomlin Hill Road south of Columbia.

Boone County Fire Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp said the injured man was a 43-year-old white male who was being trained to operate the paraglider at the time of the crash.

Two other people were at the scene; one person who was also being trained and the other was training the two.

The other two were not injured.

Blomenkamp said the man had taken off in his glider and was gaining altitude when the lines became tangled. He then lost speed and fell about 60 feet.

Blomenkamp said the man suffered what he believes to be a broken pelvis and leg.

The injured man was transported by ambulance to University Hospital.

The scene was cleared by 6 p.m.
