Update Friday, Feb. 24th at 6:00 p.m.:
An investigation is underway after a fire destroyed a popular shop on the Bagnell Dam Strip at the Lake of the Ozarks.
It happened just before 11:30 Thursday night at We're Talkin T-Shirts. High winds and hard-to-control flames prompted the Lake Ozark Fire Department to seek additional help. Laure Jett lived above We're Talkin T-Shirts with her parents, who also owned the store. "Our whole life is going to change,?? Jett said. ??My dad worked his whole life for that." Her parents were out of town but she was in bed Friday night when the fire broke out. "My cats were acting crazy, they came in and woke me up and I thought someone had come in the house so I went to check and I grabbed the door handle and it was hot and I saw smoke going across the front window so I called 9-1-1 and realized I didn't have a way out," Jett said. That's when Jett said she had to jump to safety out of a second story window. "I climbed down the roof and the police officers caught me, i had to jump," Jett said. Not only did Jett and her family lose their home and their business, the community also suffered the loss of the store, which is a staple there. "Everybody loved my parents, it was the mom and pop shop," Jett said. And a thriving one, in business for 26 years. "They've always been here, they get such good business during the summer and stuff,?? resident Ally Wells said. ??And I??ve even read on Facebook that everyone's all upset about the t-shirt place because they were a place everyone liked to get shirts at and stuff." As far as rebuilding goes, Laurie said she doubts it will happen. She said her father is too heartbroken to do so. Laurie said her family will rely on family, friends, and church. The state fire marshal is investigating.
