Jury trial to start in Miller County newborn death case

Emily Usnick

The jury trial for a woman accused of letting her newborn die is to begin Monday morning in Miller County.

36-year-old Emily Usnick faces charges for second degree murder and abandonment of a corpse.

In 2009, authorities found the body of a newborn baby in the trunk of a car at a home in St. Elizabeth. Usnick wasn't charged in connection with the death until February 2012.

Police believe Usnick gave birth unattended and did not seek medical care for the child, Police said she put the baby's body in a plastic bag and container.

If convicted, she faces up to 30 years or life in prison.
