Judge backs $1.1 million ruling against Catholic Diocese of Kansas City and St. Joseph
Fri, 15 Aug 2014 03:27:10 GMT — A judge has affirmed an award of $1.1 million against the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City and St. Joseph for violating the terms of a 2008 settlement with victims of sexual abuse by priests. The Kansas City Star reports Jackson County District Judge Bryan Round agreed with an arbitrator's ruling in a breach-of-contract lawsuit. The plaintiffs argued the diocese failed to abide by the non-monetary terms of the 2008 settlement, including a requirement to report suspected abuse immediately. The diocese said Thursday it disputes many of the arbitrator's findings but would continue to honor a pledge to provide a safe environment for children. The breach-of-contract lawsuit centered on the failure of the diocese to quickly report suspected abuse by a priest who later pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.
