Jefferson City Police prepare for Westboro Baptist protests

Jefferson City Police say they respect the right to peaceful protest but are prepared to maintain a safe atmosphere.

The Jefferson City Police Department is preparing for potential pickets by the Westboro Baptist Church at various locations in the city Tuesday.

The police department says they have spoken with other area law enforcement to make sure the protests remain peaceful and safe for both Westboro Baptist protesters and counter-protesters.

Police say past demonstrations by such groups have rarely resulted in arrests or disorderly conduct.

Police have also been in contact with the Jefferson City Public School District and Lincoln University about maintaining safety and order during possible demonstrations.

The police department says they respect the right to peaceful demonstration and they are confident that the community will also respect that right.
