A Jefferson City man is dead after a car accident in Polk County, Iowa Saturday afternoon.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 49-year-old Simon Kumeso Makanda was driving a minivan northbound on Highway 65 around 2:10 p.m. when the right rear tire of the vehicle blew out.
Makanda lost control of the van, which was carrying seven other occupants, which then entered the median and rolled over before coming to a rest on its top on the southbound lanes.
The seven passengers, five juveniles and two adults, were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
One adult was expected to be released Saturday night, and the remaining were going to be kept overnight for observation.
Sergeant Brent Long of the Polk County Sheriff's Office told KRCG 13 it appears the passengers were from several different families. At this point he believes some are from Missouri and some are from other states.
The investigation is ongoing and we will bring you more information as we learn it.
