      Jefferson City man arrested after shots fired melee

      Joseph Garcia, 32, is in custody for unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

      One man is in custody in the Cole County Jail after he allegedly fired a shot into the air to break up a fight Tuesday night in Jefferson City.

      According to Jefferson City police, witnesses said a physical confrontation broke out between two women in the 500 block of East Elm Street shortly before 11:00 Tuesday night. The boyfriend of one of the women then went into an apartment and retrieved a 9mm pistol, which he brandished at the women and several bystanders.

      When the fight continued, police say 32-year-old Joseph Garcia fired a shot into the air which succeeded in dispersing the crowd. Officers responded to a shots fired call and found a single 9mm shell casing and the pistol.

      Garcia was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He is in the Cole County Jail pending charges.
