The Jefferson City Fire Chief Recommendation Committee is endorsing Fire Captain Matt Schofield for the top job. Schofield was one of three finalists, all from within the fire department's current ranks, considered by the committee.
The committee voted to recommend Schofield 7-0.
The next decision is up to City Administrator Steven Crowell, who will make his recommendation to the city council. Crowell does not have to agree with the committee's candidate, and says the process may take another "several months." He says he has not yet made any decision.
Crowell has asked members of the committee to refrain from commenting publicly on their deliberations.
Although the three finalists before the recommendation committee were all from within the department, the city council does not have to choose from within the ranks, and can advertise for outside candidates if it chooses.
