Jefferson City detectives investigating shooting
Sat, 12 Mar 2011 16:27:01 GMT — Update: Wednesday, March 16 at 3:10 p.m.: Jefferson City Police are releasing more information about a shooting early Saturday morning that left a 24-year-old dead.Police said around 4 a.m. police were called to Broadway and Dunklin for a report of shots fired in the area. Shortly after, 24-year-old Cortez Bellamy arrived at Capital Region Medical Center with a gunshot wound to to the head.Police said the shooting was sparked by a fight that started at the College Complex, a club on Industrial Drive. After the fight, the vehicle carrying Bellamy was apparently followed down Missouri Blvd. Then, police believe Bellamy got out of the car at Broadway and Dunklin to confront the shooter.Police said the case is not one where someone from outside the Jefferson City area committed a crime and then left. They believe they are working with local suspects. Police also said the shooting is not connected to drugs or gangs.Investigators confirmed none of the parties were involved or connected to Lincoln University. Suspect descriptions are not being released, but witnesses in the area reported seeing a gold-colored car drive away from the scene. Update: Monday, March 14 at 1:30 p.m.:
Jefferson City police have released the name of the victim in a weekend shooting.
Captain Doug Shoemaker identified the victim as Cortez Bellamy, 24.
Shoemaker said police are looking for suspects, but officers are getting very little information from witnesses so far.
Police do have some leads in the case. Shoemaker said officers are following up on the tips.

The 24-year old victim who was shot Saturday morning in Jefferson City died later that afternoon.
The Jefferson City man passed away Saturday afternoon at the University Missouri Hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.
In a press release the Jefferson City Police Department said police responded to Capital Region Hospital Saturday morning on reports of a subject that had been transported by private vehicle to their facility with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
The victim was then transferred by helicopter to Columbia.
Jefferson City Police Detectives are continuing their investigation and are following up on all possible leads.
Detectives are investigating a shooting in Jefferson City early Saturday morning.
The police department received numerous phone calls for gunshots being fired in the area of Dunklin and Broadway Streets.
When officers arrived to the area to investigate, communications received information from Capital Region Hospital that a victim of a gunshot wound was transported to their facility.
The victim, a 24-year old male was then transported by helicopter to University Missouri Hospital in Columbia.
