Jeff City Diocese warns of phony clergyman

The Diocese of Jefferson City is warning mid-Missourians of a man claiming to be a Catholic clergyman.

The Diocese of Jefferson City is warning mid-Missourians of a man claiming to be a Catholic clergyman.

Deacon Dan Joyce says the church was notified by the Police Chief in Salisbury that a man was claiming to be a Roman Catholic priest or a monk and is asking for donations to build a monastery.

The man is believed to be using one of these names: Ryan Scott, Abbot Ryan St. Anne Gevelinger, and Most Reverend and Lord Abbott Ryan St. Anne Gevelinger.

The diocese says to the best of their knowledge this man is not a validly ordained Roman Catholic priest and similar warnings have been issued by the dioceses of St. Louis; Peoria, Illinois; Bismarck, North Dakota; and Dubuque, Iowa.

The church urges anyone who encounters this man to notify local law enforcement.
