JCPD officer involved in motorcycle accident

A Jefferson City Police officer was injured in a motorcycle accident Thursday.

A Jefferson City Police officer is still recovering after a motorcycle accident left him with serious injuries last Thursday evening.

Police said 15-year veteran officer Shawn Dumsday was traveling northbound on the 1300 block of Jefferson Street as backup to a disturbance involving a sword-wielding man.

Dumsday was ejected from the motorcycle after it left the roadway. He was wearing a helmet at the time.

Dumsday was taken by Cole County ambulance to St. Mary's and then to University Hospital.

Dumsday received serious injuries in the crash but has been stabilized. He is now recovering and working on rehabilitation.

Police said the man with the swords was involved in a dispute earlier in the day, and had apparently brought the swords to continue the altercation.

Police said the man was arrested, but did not have his identity at this time.

The Jefferson City Fraternal Order of Police and Police Officers' Association is setting up an account to assist in Shawn Dumsday's injuries.
