A man convicted of first-degree murder by jury will await his sentence at a later date .

A Platte County jury that had convicted Craig Wood of murder in the 2014 death of Hailey Owens could not come to a unanimous decision on whether he should be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole, according to KOLR-TV.

The decision of a hung jury was declared after almost four and half hours of juror deliberation.

Wood's attorney had previously conceded that Wood kidnapped and killed Haley, but said he acted impulsively when he grabbed the girl in broad daylight.

Owens was abducted while walking home from her best friend's house, just two blocks from her own home. Neighbors reported watching in horror and unsuccessfully giving chase as Owens was pulled into a pickup truck that sped away.

She was found dead hours later in the basement of Wood's home.

Greene County Judge Thomas Mountjoy will formally sentence Wood, according to KOLR-TV. A trial sentencing could come Jan. 11 during a hearing on a motion for a new trial.
