      Homicide at Jefferson City Correctional Center

      UPDATE: The Cole County Sheriffâ??s Department is investigating a homicide that happened at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.Sheriff Greg White tells KRCG 13 that 67-year-old Jose Benitez was found dead from an apparent physical assault by his cellmate on Tuesday. No weapons were believed to be used in the attack.

      The Missouri Department of Corrections says Benitez was serving a 25-year prison sentence for statutory sodomy in the first degree from Jasper County. He has been in the Department of Corrections since March 2012.

      The attacker was serving a murder sentence and remains in isolation at JCCC. His name is expected to be released sometime Thursday.

      Upon arrival, investigators from the Cole County Sheriff's Department and the Department of Corrections worked the scene and collected over 47 pieces of evidence. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

      The investigation is still underway.

      According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, JCCC is a maximum/medium security facility that houses a total of 1,965 offenders and employs 651 staff members. There are security cameras throughout the facility, and incidents are documented in various ways including offender and staff statements, video footage and staff reports.

      Incidents are handled on a case by case basis and according to state statute and/or department policy and procedures. Sanctions can be taken, including segregation, for certain conduct violations.
