      Hartzler tours Columbia control tower

The Congresswoman said she thinks the closure in Columbia would cause safety problems.

Mid-Missouri Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood and FAA administrators asking them to explain why they need to close the air traffic control towers in Columbia and other airports across the country.

Hartzler toured Columbia??s tower with Mayor Bob McDavid Tuesday. If the Columbia tower closes, pilots flying into and out of Columbia Regional Airport would have to communicate with air traffic controllers in Springfield and Kansas City.

Hartzler said she thinks the closure in Columbia would cause safety problems.

"It was the wrong decision and they need to reverse it," she said. "If they are not willing to listen to that, then we will have the FAA appropriations that will be coming up later this year. We will be proactive in rearranging their budget for them if they are not willing to do it right now."

Columbia Regional Airport Manager Don Elliott received a letter notifying him that the airport??s tower is one of 149 nationwide scheduled to close sometime between April 7 and May 7.
