Governor Jay Nixon will skip several planned events at the Missouri State Fair to return to Ferguson after another night of violent protests following the police shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
In a statement, the governor said ??I am committed to ensuring the pain of last weekend??s tragedy does not continue to be compounded by this ongoing crisis. Once again, I ask that members of the community demonstrate patience and calm while the investigation continues, and I urge law enforcement agencies to keep the peace and respect the rights of residents and the press during this difficult time.??
The governor had planned to host the annual Governor's Ham Breakfast at the fair Thursday, meet with Sedalia business leaders and then attend a discussion on the State Energy Plan.
The shooting and violent protests also have the attention of President Obama.
The White House says President Obama is being briefed on the situation in Ferguson.
The White House says Obama was briefed late Wednesday night by Attorney General Eric Holder and senior adviser Valerie Jarrett. President Obama is vacationing on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, as are Holder and Jarrett.
