Five first responders hit by car

Four firefighters and a state trooper are in the hospital after being hit by a car at an accident scene Saturday afternoon.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Collin Stosberg confirmed to KRCG 13 crews were cleaning up after a crash near the I-70/U.S. 65 interchange a little after 4 p.m. when Timothy Perez lost control of his car, crossed the median and hit four Marshall Fire Department firefighters. A state trooper was injured when he jumped out of the way.

Stosberg said three of the firefighters sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two of them, 34-year-old Andreas Enyart and 58-year-old Richard Schaefer, were sent to University Hospital in Columbia. The other two firefighters and the state trooper were treated at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.

Stosberg said charges are pending against the driver.
