Two Boone County families are homeless after a fire destroyed part of their duplex.
All 10 occupants and their pets were not hurt.
Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday morning on North Wade School Road north of Columbia.
Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen of the left side of the building.
No one was cooking.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Donna Clifford was sleeping when the fire spread to her home on the right side of the building.
Clifford said, ??I was awoken by somebody pounding on my door saying the house is on fire. I went outside and grabbed my phone and ran out to the street and called 911. I told them what was going on. They proceeded to come to the house and put the fire out.??
Fire investigators estimate the damage at about $70,000.
The American Red Cross is helping the families with a temporary place to stay and living necessities.
